Making your bed every morning – chore or something more?

“It’s just going to be unmade again tonight”. Or, “look at how cute that little kitty looks curled up under those sheets, wouldn’t dare disturb it”. Excuses we’ve heard before. And excuses are easy to make. But, making your bed is easy too. Just a brisk tug of the sheets and fluff of the pillows and voila! Your room gets an instant facelift. But there are myriads of other reasons why you should make your bed every morning. Here are a few.

It kickstarts your day

It may not seem like a great feat but making your bed sets the tone for a productive day. If you’re not convinced, take it from a man who’s worth his salt. According to Commander of U.S. Special Operations, Naval Admiral William McRaven, “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.” He goes on to say “By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.”

It motivates you to keep your room tidy

An unmade or shoddily made bed can make a spic and span room look sloppy and vice versa. A neatly made bed adds that little something to the landscape of the room even if it’s not perfect. And once you get into the habit of making your bed you will feel inspired to go the whole nine yards and tidy up the rest of your room. Who knows, you may even take a stab at that messy pile of clothes you call a closet?

It lowers stress

Tousled bedsheets, strewn pillows and general disorganisation isn’t a site for sore eyes. Nor does it make for a calm and collected mind. A neatly made bed makes the room look collected creating a vibe of peace and competence. Your mind simulates this vibe uplifting your spirit and making stress take a nosedive.

It just makes you feel good

Know that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you walk into a cosy hotel room with a freshly made bed?  Imagine walking into the same room and chancing upon an unkempt bed with rumpled sheets. You wouldn’t want to slide under those sheets, would you? There’s just something about a bed that looks good that makes you feel good. And it doesn’t have to be a bed worthy of a hoity-toity 7-star hotel.

So, if you’re sufficiently converted to the Art of Making your Bed, go fluff those pillows and tug that sheet. Unless, of course, you have a SleepX Super Sheet which snaps right on to your mattress and stays put on it, come rain or shine.
